My Healing Story - Multiple Sclerosis
Could It Be Nutrition?

DEFINITION: Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MS is an immune-mediated demyelinating and axonal degenerative disease of the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves). MS is the most common progressive neurological disorder of young adults, affecting 350,000 to 400,000 people in the United States.
  • The median age of Multiple Sclerosis onset is 30 years.
  • Multiple Sclerosis is more common in women.
  • By 15 years from first MS symptom onset, 20% require a cane to walk.
My name is Debbie Allen. I was misdiagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in May 2005.
Since there is no single test that will specifically diagnose multiple sclerosis, a definitive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is made by a neurologist after performing a thorough neurological history and physical examination and multiple tests to rule out other conditions that can be confused with multiple sclerosis.

I noticed some unusual numbness and tingling on my left foot, which in a few days graduated to nearly my entire body! My first visit with a neurologist suggested that I obtain MRI's to investigate.

Upon review of the MRI, transverse myelitis was recognized as the first indication of MS, where lesions were discovered on my spine, more intrusive measures were suggested including a spinal fluid study to verify MS and to begin a high dose of intravenous steroids.

Doctors Use Drugs For MS
Unfortunately, the initial objective of most doctors and insurance companies is to use drugs as the initial health care defense. I am personally not one to jump into a chemical lab of drugs to minimize symptoms.

My preference is to find out what may be the root cause of this problem. Based on all evidence, it seemed that the best decision for me to address my illness was to first look at this health issue as natural as possible. Knowing that MS is an autoimmune disease, my first choice was to build my immune system using supplements and essential oils for the symptoms.

Did you know? many drugs are laden with gluten.
This is like throwing kerosene on the fire!
Just think; What if you eliminate the drugs and the dairy and gluten??

Yeast - Not Lesions!
Fortunately, my third neurologist visit was with a holistic neurologist that expanded my view on food intolerances and reviewed my diet, nutrition absorption and a supplement plan. The holistic neurologist also interpreted my MRI "lesions" as yeast along my spine instead of the initial diagnosis of transverse myelitis caused by an inflammatory process of the spinal cord, demyelination.

Upon changing my diet - eliminating dairy and gluten, my life changed!
Upon further research, I found studies reviewing common foods that can intensify the symptoms of MS. They are dairy (milk, butter and cream, cheese), grains containing gluten - especially wheat, even corn, eggs and yeast.

If you think you are sensitive to any of these foods, eliminate them for 3-6 weeks, and then reintroduce them (if you want to) to verify the reaction. Personally by removing these foods and getting your life back, you may never want to indulge in them again!

90 days following my initial misdiagnosis of MS, I was able to live my life symptom free. What did I do to accomplish this? DIET! I removed gluten and dairy from my diet. Wow - what a difference food can make in your world. It was really hard for me to believe that such simple foods that we all digest (or try to) everyday can have such a negative impact on your health.

    My "Basic" MS Protocol
  1. Look at your life: lifestyle, diet, stress, environment
  2. Review your diet
  3. Raindrop Technique
  4. Work with a Nutritionist
  5. Find and work with a holistic Neurologist
